Is Artificial Intelligence a Gift or a Trojan Horse? What Every Grandparent Needs to KnowHow Valuable is an Anchor?

by: Misty Phillip

You probably remember a time when the biggest technology concern in your home was whether your children were watching too much television. Today, the grandchildren sitting at your kitchen table are growing up in a world shaped by something far more complex, far more pervasive, and far more misunderstood than anything previous generations faced. It is called Artificial Intelligence, or AI for short. Whether you realize it or not, AI is already in your home and affecting the world all around you.

As a fellow believer who has studied technology through the lens of faith, I am not here to speak as a tech expert but as someone who cares deeply about the families in our church communities. I wrote my upcoming book, The Trojan Horse of the Digital Age: Why Christians Must Discern AI, for exactly this moment. Because, just like the ancient Greek story, something that looks like a gift can carry hidden dangers inside. And grandparents, you are the light your grandchildren need to navigate the darkness they do not yet know they are walking through.

First, Let’s Understand What We Are Actually Talking About

Artificial Intelligence is not a robot from a science fiction movie. At its most basic level, AI is a computer system that experts have trained on enormous amounts of human-generated content, such as books, articles, conversations, images, and videos. This system then recognizes patterns and generates responses that sound remarkably human.

Your grandchild’s phone now answers questions instantly, in full sentences, like a knowledgeable friend who never sleeps. ChatGPT and tools like it are completing homework assignments in thousands of homes tonight. Have you noticed an advertisement that seemed to read your mind? That is not a coincidence; that is an AI algorithm building a profile of your preferences in real time. Even the voice assistant on your kitchen counter, cheerfully answering questions about the weather, is a form of AI woven into the fabric of ordinary life.

AI is a powerful tool, and power without discernment is dangerous.

Why Should Christians Pay Attention?

The Bible does not mention Artificial Intelligence, but it has a great deal to say about wisdom, discernment, and the dangers of placing our trust in things made by human hands rather than God’s.

Proverbs 4:7 tells us: “The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom, and whatever you get, get insight.” (ESV)

We don’t need to fear this technology; instead, we should strive to educate ourselves and understand AI. Keep in mind, AI tools are being built and designed by people who hold a wide variety of worldviews, many of which are in direct conflict with biblical values. The content these systems generate, the values they subtly reinforce, and the worldview they reflect can quietly shape how our grandchildren think, what they believe, and how they see themselves and God. Therefore, we must exercise wisdom and discernment when we use AI.

Like the Trojan Horse of ancient Troy, what is being welcomed into our homes, our schools, and our churches looks appealing on the outside. It offers convenience, answers, entertainment, and connection. But we must ask what lurks within.

What AI Is Actually Doing in Your Grandchildren’s Lives Right Now

Here are some ways AI is already present in the lives of children and teenagers today, things you may not have realized:

At school: Many students are using AI writing tools to help them complete essays, research papers, and assignments. Some use it appropriately as a starting point. Others are submitting AI-generated work as their own without understanding the ethical implications.

On social media: AI algorithms decide which videos, posts, and content your grandchildren see on platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram. These algorithms keep young people engaged as long as possible, which means they often serve increasingly extreme or emotionally charged content without anyone asking for it.

In entertainment: AI is now being used to generate music, videos, artwork, and even voices of real people saying things they never said. Discerning what is real is becoming one of the greatest challenges of our time.

In conversation: Millions of young people are now turning to AI chatbots for emotional support, advice about relationships, and even spiritual guidance. These tools can sound compassionate and wise, but they are not. They have no soul, no moral compass grounded in truth, and no ability to pray.

Practical Tips for Grandparents: What You Can Do Starting Today

You do not need to become a technology expert to make a meaningful difference. You need to be present, curious, and prayerful. Here is where to start:

1. Ask questions before giving answers. The next time you are with your grandchildren, simply ask, “Are you using any AI tools for school or on your phone?” You might be surprised by what they share. Curiosity opens doors that lectures close.

2. Create a judgment-free conversation zone. Your grandchildren need a safe adult who will not panic or overreact when they share what they are doing online. Be that person. Listen first, then guide with grace.

3. Learn the basics together. Ask a grandchild to show you how AI works or watch a simple explainer video side by side. When you learn alongside them, you build trust and open, ongoing dialogue.

4. Remind them what only humans can give. Think about the last time you prayed with someone you love: the weight of their hand, the sound of their voice, the tears that came unexpectedly. That moment exists in a dimension that no machine can touch. Help your grandchildren understand what they are actually reaching for when they seek comfort online and then be the person who offers the real thing.

5. Establish your home as a place of discernment. When grandchildren visit, consider simple ground rules, such as phones and devices resting in a basket during dinner, or a conversation at the table about something they watched or read that week. Discernment is a muscle. It needs to be exercised.

6. Pray specifically over your grandchildren’s digital lives. Most grandparents pray faithfully for their grandchildren’s health, relationships, and futures. Add their digital lives to that prayer list. Pray that God would give them wisdom and discernment, that He would protect their minds and hearts, and that they would know His voice above all others.7. Share what you are learning. If an article like this one speaks to you, share it. Pass it to your adult children who are parenting in this digital age. Invite a conversation at your next family gathering. Your wisdom and your willingness to engage matters more than you know.

A Word of Encouragement

This is not a message of fear. Our God is not a God of fear, and technology is not more powerful than He is. But Scripture calls us to walk with discernment and full awareness of the world around us. That call has never been more relevant than it is right now.

The grandparents of faith who take the time to understand what their grandchildren are navigating and who choose to engage with love, wisdom, and biblical discernment are doing something profoundly important. You are building a legacy. You are modeling what it looks like to take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ, even in the digital age.

The Trojan Horse was dangerous because the people of Troy stopped asking questions. They accepted the gift without examining what was inside. We have an opportunity to do something different.

Your grandchildren need your wisdom now more than ever. And the good news is, you already carry the most powerful thing available: faith in a God who is the same yesterday, today, and forever, in every age, including this one.
