In today’s digital age, children grow up immersed in technology. From smartphones to social media, online games to streaming platforms, tech weaves its way into our grandchildren’s daily lives. More often than not, rather than pencil and paper, children now use a computer or tablet for homework. The digital landscape can feel overwhelming for grandparents who may not have grown up with these technologies, especially when it comes to ensuring their grandchildren are safe while using it.
“We will not hide them from their descendants; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, His power, and the wonders He has done.” Psalm 78:4 (NIV)
One of our most important tasks as grandparents is to pass down our faith. We’ll find it’s more challenging to fulfill our charge if our grandchildren bury their faces in their screens. Request that your grandchildren stow away their technology during visits, then lavish your time and love on them. This might cause angst at first, but the legacy you will leave will outlast any argument you receive.
“Is not wisdom found among the aged? Does not long-life bring understanding?” Job 12:12 (NIV)
Sometimes, it’s not practical to ban their devices. Don’t give up. If you can’t keep them off, you can learn to keep them safe. Even if you don’t fully understand technology, the wisdom you have gained from life experiences is indispensable. While wisdom (and patience!) may be tested by this generation, you can put it to use.
Here are practical steps you can take to help protect your grandchildren online.
1. Have Open Conversations About Technology
One of the most powerful tools grandparents can use to keep their grandchildren safe is communication. You don’t have to understand every app or website, but you can encourage an open dialogue about their online activities. Get nosey. Ask them what games they play, what websites they visit, or who they’re chatting with.
Let your grandchildren know that they can talk to you about anything suspicious or uncomfortable they encounter online. Being a trusted listener makes it more likely they will turn to you if something goes wrong.
You can help teach your grandchildren how to think critically. Encourage them to question what they see online. Help them understand that not everything they encounter on the internet is true or safe. Whether it’s a too-good-to-be-true offer or a suspicious message, you can teach them the importance of being skeptical and cautious online.
2. Establish Rules Together
Discuss and establish boundaries together. Involving your grandchildren in creating rules about technology use will help them feel more responsible for following them. Useful rules might include:
- Screen time limits: Ensure that they take breaks and balance their online time with other activities.
- No sharing personal information: Explain the importance of not giving out their name, address, school, or phone number online.
· Only chatting with people they know: Help them understand the dangers of talking to strangers online.
3. Use Parental Controls
Most devices and apps offer easy-to-use features that can help you monitor or limit what your grandchildren access online.
- Content filters: Block inappropriate websites or limit access to certain types of content. Set up filters so children must get approval from you before downloading anything.
- Time limit apps: These apps automatically restrict the amount of time your grandchild can spend on devices.
- Monitoring tools: Use built-in tools that can give you reports about what apps or websites they’re using.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help—numerous online platforms offer tutorials or guides.
Keeping your grandchildren safe from technology is a team effort. Talk to their parents about what tools and rules they use to keep their children safe online. By understanding the boundaries already established at home, you can ensure consistency when your grandchildren are in your care.
Share your concerns or observations with their parents. If you notice that your grandchild seems withdrawn or anxious after being online, make sure to communicate this with their parents so they can take any necessary steps to address it.
4. Encourage Offline Activities
One way to reduce the risks that come with excessive screen time is to encourage offline activities. Engage your grandchildren in hobbies or outdoor play. Whether it’s gardening, board games, or taking walks, spending time together without screens can provide a great opportunity for bonding.
Grandparents often have a wealth of wisdom and life experience, which can be shared through meaningful activities like storytelling, cooking, or crafting—things that have nothing to do with technology but can help create lasting memories. When appropriate, incorporate healthy use of technology by asking them to search for a recipe, find an instructional craft video or research a historical or scientific fact.
5. Stay Curious and Informed
You don’t have to become a tech expert, but staying curious and willing to learn is key. Ask your grandchildren to explain their favorite apps or games to you. Often, they enjoy showing what they know, and it helps you get a glimpse into their online world.
There are online resources and easy-to-understand articles specifically designed to help older adults stay up to date on technology and online safety. Staying informed will help you feel more confident about how to support your grandchildren.
Conclusion: Your Role is Important
Although the fast pace of technology might feel daunting, your role as a grandparent remains invaluable. You don’t need to be a tech wizard to help your grandchildren stay safe, you simply need to be present, communicative, and supportive. By setting boundaries, encouraging open conversations, and learning about available resources, you can help guide your grandchildren toward safe and healthy digital habits.
Heavenly Father, help us keep our grandchildren safe. Open our eyes to the dangers they may encounter. We rely on Your Holy Spirit to guide us in this task. Thank You for loving them more than we ever could. Amen.
