Finding Delight in the Everyday
In the busyness of life, it can be easy to move through our days focused only on tasks and to-do lists. We can get so caught up in the details that we fail to see the beauty right in front of us – the smiles on our kid’s faces, the sunset out the window, or even just a few minutes of laughter with our spouse.
God calls us to something more
In Psalm 37:4, He urges us, “Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart” (ESV). When we fix our eyes on Jesus, our perspective shifts. We recognize blessings that we overlooked before. Opportunities to delight in God’s goodness surround us, if only we take the time to appreciate them.
What does it look like to delight in the LORD everyday? Here are a few ideas:
Enjoy Time in God’s Word
There is nothing more delightful than diving deep into Scripture. As we read the Bible, we better understand God’s character and glimpses of His great love for us. We can explore word meanings, cross-references, historical context – uncovering treasure after treasure that points us to Jesus.
Sing Praises
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God” (Colossians 3:16 ESV). Gathering together, or even by ourselves, to lift our voices in worship draws us closer to God’s heart.
Appreciate God’s Creativity
Just taking a walk outdoors reminds us of God’s infinite creativity and attention to detail. Watching birds flit from tree to tree, sunlight filtering through the canopy, the crunch of leaves underfoot… Noticing small moments like these turn our focus back to our Creator.
Delight in Our Spouse
After years of marriage, it can be tempting to take our spouse for granted. But if we intentionally pursue delight – planning regular dates, asking thoughtful questions, initiating fun adventures together – we often find our love rekindled. Small, unexpected acts of affection remind us of the blessing it is to walk through life hand-in-hand.
Enjoy Our Kids
Parenting is equal parts exhausting and enlightening. But kids grow up fast. When we make time to enter into their world – dancing together in the living room, stargazing on the back porch, or snuggling up to read bedtime stories – we create lasting memories. And their uninhibited joy draws out laughter and lightness in us as well.
The Father Delights in Us
Most wonderfully, despite our frailty and failures, God Himself delights in us as His children. “The Lord takes pleasure in his people…” (Psalm 149:4 ESV). Because of Jesus’ sacrifice on our behalf, we have the honor of being called “holy and beloved” (Colossians 3:12). God looks at us with joy and love. As we remind ourselves of this truth, it transforms how we walk through mundane moments.
Rather than simply existing, we can live fully aware of God’s presence. Our days become an adventure – seeing Divine fingerprints across everyday details. Things once overlooked now elicit gratitude and praise.
This week, may we open our eyes to glimpse God’s glory around us. And may we choose delight.
