My husband drove me to the hospital. I was sure my death grip on the car’s door handles would leave a lasting right-handed imprint in the plastic, that’s how much pain I was in.
Thanks to this excruciating pain, I did something I am not proud to admit now.
I screamed at my husband, “Drive on the sidewalk if you have to! Just get me there!” Who knew so much fire and fury could come out of one woman’s mouth? But it did.
I meant what I said. There was no alternative. The pain was so immense and intense, I didn’t think I would live. My husband, however, didn’t heed my demands or dramatics. I tried the next best thing; I asked him to drive on the opposite side of the road to get me there (again, he didn’t listen).
No dice.
I was stuck. Powerless with nowhere to turn. With a man who would nobly defy the laws. I had to admit, now, there was no way. I was stuck in greater New York City traffic with a hospital too far to run to and a body blowing up in dire pain. I was now powerless and helpless.
It’s an unbelievable and unfathomable place to find oneself in.
Have you ever been in a situation in which you feel completely powerless? When it appears — there is absolutely nothing left to do.
Maybe there, your head spins. Maybe there, confusion reigns. Maybe there, you feel like fainting. Maybe there, you have anxiety beating out of your very chest.
For me? There was only one hope left – God.
He’s the only One when there is no one; He is the only power when all power is gone; He is the only hope when all hope has left the building (or, in my case, the city street). When there is nothing left – there is always God, who was and is and is to come. God always – is.
I cried out, “Only You, God, only You! No one else can – right now — but You! No one can save me but You.”
I was out of my mind but at least had some sort of right mind to find hope in God, which is always available. Always. In every case.
My only hope was God. My husband couldn’t make my pain go. No good Samaritan could clear the traffic. No genie could make the hospital appear. Only God could save me and get me out of the excruciating pain I found myself in.
I was both powerless, but powerfully with God.
Psalm 25:5 says it well: “My hope is in you all day long” (Mt. 3:3 NIV)
I don’t think anyone ever wants to be in a place of utter hopelessness. No one ever requests to be here. No one ever invites helpless happenings like this into their life. At least I have never met a person like this. However, when times like this come – there is a knowing, a perceiving and a realizing of who really is in charge. It is 100% God.
In our lack of ability, we see God’s sufficiency.
In utter humility, we find His bravery.
In complete dependency, we discover His supremacy.
Only God.
Maybe you are in an “only God” moment. Maybe all hope is lost. Maybe all help has abandoned you. Maybe all resources, financially, are dried up. Maybe all natural happenings have beat you down.
May I encourage you?
Your powerlessness is your doorway to His powerfulness via prayer.
The prayer doesn’t have to be lengthy or even pretty. It just has to be sincere: “Help God!”
Humility invites the incredibility of God to move on one’s behalf. You are not far from God, my friend, you are so very close.
And, regarding my story? Eventually, my husband got me to the hospital, the doctors got me to a bed, and God brought me through recovery. Every time, God is faithful.
Remember: when you are at the end of yourself, or some situation, you are at the powerful start of God and His rule!
You have gotten yourself to a most powerful position in Christ Jesus!n walls so that intentional and meaningful conversation occurs. We thank You for this. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
