When was the last time you went on a scavenger hunt? Provided in this article is a spiritual scavenger hunt for Easter designed to help readers connect with God in a fun new way.
Easter is a great time to deepen our connection with God. Great for adults and children alike, whether you do a scavenger hunt on your own or with others, enjoy this activity as you experience God’s presence and goodness in a new and different way. Here is a guide for hunting ten real-life symbols of His grace and love.
- A piece of fruit
“I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” John 15:5 (ESV)
The night before He died, Jesus gave some of His most important teachings. His illustration about the vine and branches reminds us we can do nothing apart from His power. - Water
“Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.” John 13:5 (ESV)
Jesus demonstrated selflessness when He washed the disciples’ feet. He modeled how we should love each other with this demonstration of service. - An egg
“Jesus said, ‘I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow this day, until you deny three times that you know me.’” Luke 22:34 (ESV)
Chickens are part of the Easter story. Jesus predicted Peter would deny Him, and the rooster’s crow proved His foreknowledge. Though we turn away from Jesus, He forgives us and welcomes us back, just as He did for Peter. - Something red
“And being in agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.” Luke 22:44 (ESV)
When Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane, He struggled so much that His capillaries broke. He understands our struggles and knows what it feels like to wrestle with the Father in prayer. - Something purple
“And they clothed him in a purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him.” Mark 15:17 (ESV)
Purple was the color of royalty in Jesus’ time. Though the soldiers were mocking Him, they were unknowingly clothing the King of Kings, who deserves all our praise. - Something prickly
“And twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on his head and put a reed in his right hand. And kneeling before him, they mocked him, saying, ‘Hail, King of the Jews!’” Matthew 27:29 (ESV)
Jesus endured great physical pain during his crucifixion. Imagine what a crown of thorns would feel like on your head. Thank Jesus for suffering such pain on your behalf, to take away your sins. - Something black
“Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour.” Matthew 27:45 (ESV)
On the day Jesus died, nature responded to the will of God in unusual ways. The darkness He brought at midday was a symbol of sin and death that Jesus would defeat forever. - A flower
“Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. So because of the Jewish day of Preparation, since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there.” John 19:41-42 (ESV)
Jesus first appeared after his resurrection in a garden. The flowers of spring can remind you that Jesus came back in a place of life to give you life for all eternity. - A rock
“And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it.” Matthew 28:2 (ESV)
The soldiers set a large stone at the tomb so no one could go in or out. But God sent an angel to miraculously roll the stone away. Our God is the God of miracles! - Something white
“His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow.” Matthew 28:3 (ESV)
The angels that appear in the resurrection story wear dazzling white clothing. Their clothing is like the clothing we will be given someday in heaven, as described in Revelation 7.
Once you’ve completed your spiritual scavenger hunt, take a moment to reflect on what these items mean to you. Thank and praise God for giving you new life through Jesus’ sacrifice. Then share your story with others, encouraging them to go on their own spiritual scavenger hunts to connect more deeply with God this Easter.
