The Science and Sacred Calling of Being a Grandparent

by: Dr. Michelle Bengtson

Three months ago, my husband and I welcomed our first grandchild into the world. I thought I understood what it would feel like. After all, I’d experienced the profound love of being a mother. But no one fully prepared me for the overwhelming joy, tenderness, and fierce love that would accompany becoming a grandmother.

Every coo, every smile, every tiny expression captivates my heart. Watching this precious little life grow reminds me daily of God’s goodness, creativity, and faithfulness across generations.

If you’ve become a grandparent and found yourself wondering why your emotions seem deeper, your heart feels fuller, or your sense of purpose has been renewed, there is a reason for that.

As both a Christian and a neuropsychologist, I find it fascinating that what Scripture has long taught about generational relationships is now being confirmed through neuroscience. God designed us for connection. He created our brains, hearts, and spirits to flourish through meaningful relationships—and grandparenthood is one of His most beautiful expressions of that design.

Your Brain Was Designed for Generational Connection

Many people assume that the intense emotions they experience when becoming a grandparent are simply sentimental. While there is certainly a strong emotional component, there is actually much more happening beneath the surface.

Research suggests that interacting with grandchildren activates many of the same brain systems involved in caregiving, attachment, empathy, and nurturing. In other words, your brain doesn’t retire from loving.

In fact, it continues to respond powerfully to opportunities for connection and caregiving well into later adulthood.

One of the primary neurochemicals involved is oxytocin, often called the “bonding hormone.” Oxytocin is released when we hold, cuddle, comfort, or connect with someone we love. It promotes feelings of trust, affection, warmth, and emotional closeness.

Have you ever held your grandchild and felt your heart melt instantly?

That’s not just emotion. That’s part of God’s remarkable biological design.

He created our brains to bond deeply with those He entrusts to our care.

Why Grandchildren Bring Such Deep Joy

Many grandparents tell me that spending time with their grandchildren makes them feel younger, happier, and more hopeful.

Again, neuroscience helps explain why.

Positive interactions with grandchildren stimulate dopamine pathways in the brain. Dopamine is often associated with pleasure, motivation, anticipation, and reward. It helps create feelings of enjoyment and emotional well-being.

When you’re reading stories together, playing games, rocking a baby to sleep, or simply watching your grandchild discover something new, your brain is experiencing a natural boost in these feel-good chemicals.

But I believe there’s something even deeper happening.

Grandchildren help us rediscover wonder.

They remind us to slow down long enough to marvel at a butterfly, laugh at simple things, and celebrate everyday milestones. Through their eyes, we begin seeing God’s world with fresh appreciation.

And wonder is good for the soul.

It’s difficult to remain discouraged when you’re regularly reminded of God’s ongoing work through the generations.

The Gift of Wisdom That Comes with Age

One of the greatest blessings of aging is perspective.

By the time we become grandparents, we’ve walked through seasons of joy and sorrow, success and disappointment, certainty and uncertainty. We’ve learned lessons through experience that no textbook could ever teach.

As a result, many grandparents offer something children desperately need: emotional safety.

You don’t have to prove yourself to your grandchildren.

You don’t have to be perfect.

You simply need to be present.

The wisdom that comes with age often enables grandparents to listen more patiently, love more freely, and respond with greater compassion than they might have years earlier.

I’ve often said that healing occurs in the context of safe relationships. Grandparents are uniquely positioned to provide that kind of healing presence.

In many ways, we become living examples of God’s heart.

We remind our grandchildren that they are loved not because of what they accomplish but because of who they are.

Isn’t that exactly how our Heavenly Father loves us?

Grandparenthood and a Renewed Sense of Purpose

Many people enter their sixties wondering what their next chapter will look like.

Children are grown. Careers may be slowing down or ending. Life begins to look different than it once did. And we often begin to question our purpose.

Yet becoming a grandparent often awakens a fresh sense of purpose.

The focus shifts from achievement to legacy.

Earlier in life, much of our energy is devoted to building careers, raising families, and managing responsibilities. As grandparents, we begin asking different questions:

What wisdom can I pass on?

How can I encourage the next generation?

What spiritual legacy will I leave behind?

These questions matter because God has always intended faith to be shared across generations.

Psalm 145:4 tells us, “One generation shall praise Your works to another and shall declare Your mighty acts.”

What a beautiful calling.

Whether you’re praying over your grandchildren, sharing stories of God’s faithfulness, teaching them Scripture, or simply showing up consistently, you’re making an eternal investment.

Never underestimate the power of your influence.

Long after gifts are forgotten and milestones fade, children often remember the grandparents who prayed for them, believed in them, and loved them well.

A Sacred Calling, Not Just a New Title

I believe one of the greatest lies our culture tells women is that they become less valuable as they age.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

God never views aging as a diminishing of purpose. Instead, He often uses later seasons to deepen our influence.

Grandparenthood isn’t merely a family role. It’s a sacred calling. It’s an opportunity to nurture, encourage, mentor, and point younger generations toward Christ.

The tenderness you feel, the renewed joy you experience, and the desire you have to leave a meaningful legacy are not accidents.

They are evidence of God’s design at work. He created your brain for connection. He created your heart for love. And He created this season to be rich with purpose.

So, if you’ve ever wondered whether your best years are behind you, let me encourage you: they may simply look different than they once did.

Your influence matters.

Your prayers matter.

Your wisdom matters.

And the love you pour into the next generation may become one of the most significant chapters of your life.
