Love Interrupts: The Book of Ruth—When Coincidence Becomes Covenant

by: Stacy Sanchez

“The women said to Naomi: “Praise be to the LORD, who this day has not left you without a redeemer. May he become famous throughout Israel!” (Ruth 4:14 NIV)

It Just So Happens

The book of Ruth is often cited as a beautiful love story. We hear Ruth’s famous words quoted in wedding ceremonies: Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God (Ruth 1:16 NIV). We admire Boaz’s generosity and celebrate the story’s happy ending. Yet beneath the romance lies something even more profound. Ruth is a story about how God’s covenant love interrupts our lives in unexpected ways.

Throughout the book, events unfold with what seems like remarkable “just so happens” coincidences.

·       A famine drives Naomi’s family from Bethlehem to Moab.

·       Ruth, a Moabite widow, chooses to remain loyal to her grieving mother-in-law.

·       Returning to Bethlehem, Ruth just so happens to glean in the field of Boaz.

·       Boaz just so happens to be a relative capable of redeeming Naomi’s family.

·       Ruth just so happens to become the great-grandmother of King David.

The narrator quietly invites us to recognize that these events are anything but accidental. What appears to be coincidence is actually Providence at work. Behind ordinary circumstances, God is quietly accomplishing extraordinary purposes.

Perhaps the most remarkable “it just so happens” is that this story unfolds in Bethlehem.

Bethlehem: The House of Bread

Bethlehem was a small town whose name means “House of Bread.” Ironically, Naomi’s family left Bethlehem because of famine. She returned believing God had dealt bitterly with her for leaving Israel. Having lost her husband, sons, and the future she’d envisioned, she asked others to call her Mara, meaning “bitter.”

Naomi interpreted her suffering as evidence that God didn’t care.

How often do we do the same?

When prayers go unanswered, relationships fracture, dreams die, or suffering enters our lives, it is easy to conclude that God has abandoned us. Yet the book of Ruth reminds us that God often works behind the scenes.

Naomi couldn’t see that God was weaving redemption into their story. While she saw loss, God saw restoration. While she experienced emptiness, God prepared fullness. God used Ruth’s courage and loyalty to set His plan in motion.

Generations after Ruth and Boaz, another child would be born in that same small town. This child would become our Kinsman Redeemer.

Jesus Christ entered humanity not as a distant observer but as one of us. He took on flesh and blood, stepped into our suffering, and paid the price we could never pay ourselves.

The House of Bread later became the birthplace of Jesus, the Bread of Life, reminding us that even then, God had our redemption on His mind as He worked through a Moabite widow.

When Coincidence Becomes Covenant

To appreciate Ruth, we must understand covenant—a concept largely lost in our modern world.

Most relationships today function like contracts. They are based on mutual obligations and can be dissolved any time.

Covenants are different.

The Hebrew word for covenant is hesed—a sacred, unbreakable relationship marked by steadfast love, faithfulness, and enduring commitment. Covenant says, “I belong to you.” It remains when circumstances become difficult and chooses loyalty even when walking away would be easier.

At first glance, the book of Ruth seems to be about chance encounters. As the plot unfolds, however, we realize what Naomi perceived as random events were expressions of God’s covenant faithfulness. What looked like a coincidence was covenant in action.

God was not absent in Naomi’s suffering. He was present, working through ordinary people and everyday events to bring about redemption.

Count the Cost

Boaz is called a kinsman redeemer. To modern readers, this concept can feel foreign, yet it was deeply rooted within Israel’s understanding of covenant responsibility.

A kinsman redeemer was a close relative who protected vulnerable family members. He restored what had been lost, preserved family inheritance, and provided security for widows facing uncertain futures.

Redemption always came at a cost. The redeemer willingly entered another person’s loss to bring restoration. Boaz fulfills this role beautifully for Naomi and Ruth, but his actions point beyond himself to Someone greater.

Reflecting the Character of God

Both Ruth and Boaz reveal God’s character.

Ruth demonstrates covenant loyalty when she refuses to leave Naomi. Her commitment extends beyond duty as she embraces Naomi’s people and God as her own.

Boaz likewise embodies hesed through his treatment of Ruth. He notices the vulnerable foreigner gleaning in his fields and responds with generosity, protection, and dignity.

Together, Ruth and Boaz provide living examples of God’s covenant faithfulness. Ruth’s loyalty mirrors God’s refusal to abandon His people. Boaz’s generosity reflects God’s loving-kindness toward the vulnerable and broken. Both display the steadfast love at the heart of God’s relationship with humanity.

The book of Ruth is not merely inviting us to admire two faithful people. It is bidding us to recognize the character of the God they reflect—a God whose love remains steadfast and whose commitment to redeem His people never wavers.

Love Interrupts

The book of Ruth concludes by revealing that Ruth, a Moabite from a people long considered enemies of Israel, became part of the Messianic line. God’s redemptive plan has always been bigger than human divisions, demonstrating that He can transform outsiders into family and enemies into heirs of promise.

Love interrupts exclusion.

Love interrupts bitterness.

Love interrupts despair.

Naomi believed her story had ended in tragedy, but God was writing redemption—hers and ours. Through the ordinary faithfulness of Ruth and Boaz, God quietly advanced His extraordinary plan of salvation.

The same remains true today.

Often, we cannot see God’s hand at work in our own lives. Yet Ruth beckons us to trust that God’s covenant love is still active even when His purposes remain hidden.

What appears to be coincidence may be Providence. What seems like interruption may be redemption.

Love interrupts.

Even when we cannot see it, God turns bitterness into blessing and coincidence into covenant. Trust that the God who was faithful to Naomi, Ruth, and Boaz is faithfully working in your story, too.
