It’s easy to trust God when life is going well. But what about when the circumstances we’re praying about don’t change?
While listening to Truth For Life with Alistair Begg on October 10 (airs weekdays at 11:30 AM CT on KHCB), we were reminded of something from the book of Habakkuk: Our confidence in God doesn’t have to depend on how well life is going.
That got us thinking about what trusting God really looks like when life gets difficult, and we were led to three truths we believe are worth holding on to.
1. Trusting God Doesn’t Mean Everything Will Work Out the Way We Want
We often pray for God to change our circumstances, and sometimes He does. But Habakkuk reminds us that even when things don’t improve, God remains worthy of our trust.
In Habakkuk 3:17-18, the prophet describes a world where crops fail, food disappears, and everything seems to fall apart. Yet he declares that he will rejoice in the Lord.
His circumstances hadn’t changed. His perspective had.
2. Remember What God Has Already Done
When we’re facing uncertainty, it’s easy to become consumed by what’s happening right now.
But throughout Scripture, we see God’s faithfulness to His people. Remembering how He has worked in the past helps us trust Him with what we cannot see today.
We have no greater reminder of His faithfulness than Jesus Christ and what He accomplished for us on the cross.
3. Joy and Difficult Circumstances Can Exist Together
Being a Christian doesn’t mean pretending everything is fine. We can experience disappointment, grief, and uncertainty while still finding joy in the Lord.
Why? Because our joy is rooted in who God is, not simply in what He gives us.
Something to consider today: What circumstance have you been waiting for God to change? Perhaps the first step isn’t asking Him to change what’s happening around you, but asking Him to help you trust Him in the middle of it.
