“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (NIV)
During the Thanksgiving season, it’s common to hear and see the word grateful. It’s embroidered on hand towels, garlands, wreaths and adorns tablescapes. But why is this word so important for us as believers during this season?
In today’s Scripture, the Apostle Paul is writing to the Thessalonians, encouraging his readers who were under grave persecution. His instruction was to give thanks “in all circumstances,” not just when things were going their way. As believers, this is not just a singular event; it’s a conscious choice to daily fix our eyes on Jesus rather than on our circumstances.
What if today we chose to adopt a posture of gratitude? It takes courage to be grateful when things are tough. But it’s in those trying moments that our faith and our relationship with God grows.
If we choose to redirect our thoughts to the cross and receive His grace, it can ignite in us a heart of gratitude. This is when we can fully prepare for Thanksgiving and the work the Holy Spirit wants to do within us.
Reflect on the ways that Jesus has extended His grace to you. Take time to write out 5 things you are grateful for and thank Him for each one.
